A Ray of Hope

"
A Ray of Hope" is a re-written version of "
Somebody Help ME". It is written for any age group that wants a no-nonsense approach to learning about the illness ME/CFS, using simple, down-to-earth language and relevant scenarios.
The analogy of a mountain climb is re-used but with very appropriate suggestions made for each mountaineer, depending on their ability - from those mildly affected with ME/CFS to those very severely affected. Throughout each of the chapters, one is able to relate perfectly to the situations that present themselves, and feel enabled to follow the suggestions made towards recovery.
No one would dream of climbing a mountain without either the understanding of the mountain (the illness ME and how/why it affects the body), or how each mountaineer would need to prepare themselves for such a climb (the planned route to recovery).
The route uses an holistic approach (often called "Activity Management"), which many clinicians and patients prefer.
"Activity management is a goal-oriented and person-centred approach tailored to the needs of the person with CFS/ME. It should include (amongst others):
- Understanding that activities have physical, emotional and cognitive components, and identifying these components.
- Planning daily activities to allow for a balance and variety of different types of activity, rest and sleep." 1.6.2.22 NICE Guidelines for CFS/ME 2007
"
I read Somebody Help ME last year and it helped me but "A Ray of Hope" brings everything up-to-date and gives a very clear - and easy-to-follow plan to get through ME based on present knowledge. More importantly, it works from the patient's point of view!" Katherine 25yrs
Letter from a reader, severely affected by ME/CFS
Dear Jill,
I wanted to thank you SO much for writing "A Ray of Hope". I cannot tell you how useful it has been. I had been trying to create a new management plan both for myself and for others with severe ME at my local group and have recommended your book to them.
All that I read in your book really cemented my thoughts and gave me a lot more clarity and confidence. If I had to, I would divide the helpful sections into 3:
- Current knowledge of ME, which enables you, in a simple way to make choices about appropriate treatment directions.
- Emotions, which obviously have to be dealt with, but as there are so few knowledgeable therapists around (most professionals I have tried would rather "have a bash" at curing the ME rather than helping you deal with it!) it all has to be worked out on one's own, your book supports one to do that.
- Activity management - thank goodness for someone stepping back and saying "hey, let's stop arguing, there are positive elements of pacing, CBT and GET, we can use them all"!
A typical day for me now includes a bit of personal care, some time on the laptop, a burst of DVD, being read to quietly and talking quietly. The variety does me good. Before, I had such a definite structure to my day and wasn't switching activity. I would blow all my energy on one thing (with a "get it done" mentality) and have no energy left for anything else. I can see now that by managing my life that way I was effectively doing less than I am now and certainly not building up my capabilities evenly (which is obviously going to be very important for full recovery). I'm working on the emotional side and feel in a fairly good position to begin to build. Thanks for your help in this. (27 yrs old. Severely Affected).

"Three Villians?" is based on the transcript of a lecture on M.E. (Myalgic Encephalopathy) given by American Paediatrician, Dr. David Bell. It explains the physical changes which occur in the body during the chronic illness, offering reasons for the many and often bizarre symptoms of M.E.
This lecture explained that three systems together cause the symptoms of M.E. For many it was a revelation to hear:
"For the first time, I was hearing exactly how it feels to have M.E."
Reviews of Three Villains:
"I read the book with great pleasure and love your writing style. You make our work so understandable" Dr. David Bell
"Living with the devastating symptoms of ME is very hard, but what makes it worse is all the inevitable questions that swim in your head, "Why do I feel like this? What is happening to me?" Then friends start to ask you the same things and how can you possibly explain to them when no one has been able to give you the answers?
But now, thanks to "Three Villains?" I finally feel I have a few answers. I have read about ME research before, but never have results seemed so close to what ME feels like to me as the work of Dr. Bell, which Jill Moss writes about. Not only this, but through her own personal experience of ME, Jill Moss has been able to show how Dr. Bell's research can be used in simple ways to help manage the symptoms.
"Three Villains?" has certainly increased my own understanding of my symptoms and has therefore made them a bit easier to cope with. I will definitely be passing "Three Villains?" on to my friends and family because I know that it can benefit us all." Young ME Sufferer, 18 yrs
"Jill Moss' common sense and practical approach to ME should appeal to young sufferers and carers alike. Her personal experience of this devastating illness and her understanding of young people enable her to interpret Dr. Bell's fascinating research with clarity and give advice which is both realistic and reassuring." Mother of a young sufferer.
Charity Begins at Home

Charity Begins at Home is an account of the birth and development of the unique, award-winning charity called Association of Young People with ME (AYME), by its founder. AYME is an organisation run by members for members, with many of the membership volunteering to run the six service teams, with support and advice from the office staff.
The workings of the charity, including leadership and user involvement, are analysed in an attempt to find reasons for AYME's obvious success, discussing whether that success can be transplanted to other, similar organisations.
It is a light-hearted book, with a serious message of inclusion at all levels. The discussion of social grouping within organisations and leadership styles makes it a valuable tool for student discussion groups and dissertation writing.
Reviews
"Terrific book. I really enjoyed reading it"
Esther Rantzen, President of AYME
"A true story of kitchen table to National Charity. For myself, the key point in the book was how Jill Moss saw an opportunity and managed to tap into and manage that ability to develop AYME. A great self help story" Carol Sellwood. National Director of Charities. Baker Tilley
"This is a fascinating case study, a moving personal insight into the development of a voluntary organisation. It really encapsulates the spirit of voluntary activity - people working together, taking action and really making a difference. The analysis of leadership and member involvement makes a complex issue easy to follow." Peter Dyer. Trustee & Governance Advisor. NCVO
